Methana is a peninsula connected to the Peloponnese (Greece) and consists completely out of former lava. It belongs to an active volcanic area together with the islands Melos, Santorini an Nysiros. The last outburst was in 258 B.C. near the village Kameni Chora. The pictures taken from the volcano on this page were taken from this volcano. The lava had reached the coast and even extended the peninsula of Methana for about 500m in northwestern direction.
The village of Methana is a health resort with sulphureous baths. The typical rotten eggs odour is omnipresent in the neighboorhoud. The village itself offers some hotels and taverns with good food.
